There is more and more in the media these days about memory foam. If you're a bit confused as to what exactly this material is and what can be made from it, read on! First of all, memory foam is indeed a foam. It was developed by NASA some 50 years ago but never really made it's way into the space system. Now while it is more or less just a type of form, It has one very unique characteristic: It's ability to remember. By this I mean it's shape. While most foams change shape under pressure, they always return where they started once that pressure is gone. Memory foam, on the other hand, will stay in specific shape as long as their is heat pressed onto it.
So what can this material be used for? Well, memory foam can be used for a lot of things. It's found primarily in the bedding industry though. Mattresses, bed toppers and pillows made from this material, in particular, are extremely popular these days.
These products are great as they allow the user to be more comfortable than they would be while using a normal foam. Take a mattress, for example. A regular mattress is flat. Now unless you have a square body type, the mattress isn't really suited for your body. A memory foam mattress, however, will shape itself to the contour of your specific body size. The body's natural heat shapes the foam you see. Even if you turn a lot at night, the mattress will readjust to support your new position. Let's see a plain old foam mattress do that!
